Wrekin clinch League win!

Wrekin are celebrating victory in the 2023 West Midlands League following a tense finale at Octavian Droobers’ Sutton Park event on Sunday. The result breaks a hoodoo of six runners-up placings in the last 10 years, and is only the second league win for the club in the 45-year history of the competition (the first being way back in 1981!). It also means Wrekin end the year as double champions, having also won the Laurie Bradley Trophy on New Year’s Day.

Going into Sunday’s event Wrekin held a modest lead over bigger rivals Harlequins and Octavian Droobers, and the collective determination of the club to seal the win was evident in the fabulous turn-out, with over 40 members travelling to run in the wind and rain.

On the day, class wins for Annie Lewis, Harriet Allinson, Eva Spurling, Maria Murphy, Di Jacks, Marian White, Mike Goldthorpe and Mike Callow led the way, while many others also pitched in with heavy scores.

I’m really proud of the club managing to win the West Midlands Orienteering League for the first time in over 40 years. It has taken a great effort from all the club members to not just fight off the tough opposition, but win by over 200 points

Tom Lewis, Chair
