Wrekin at the CompassSport Trophy Final

Last Sunday, October 20th, Wrekin Orienteers took part in the CompassSport Trophy Final, having qualified earlier in the year in a heat at Brereton Spurs on Cannock Chase.

The final took place a Holcombe Range, a former army training ground near Bury, Lancashire. It includes both upland moor top and a partly wooded valley.

On the day, heavy rain and high winds made conditions very challenging for most competitors – only the earliest and latest starters escaped the worst of the weather.

We finished eighth of the eleven finalists, but were far from disgraced; the whole field was tightly bunched with the top nine all finishing within less than 130 points, and we were only 61 points off third place.

Congratulations to the winners, South Ribble OC, who scored heavily across all the classes, and to all our runners, who made the long journey and overcame wind, rain and marshes to achieve an honourable result.
