John Bennison “Long O”, Sunday 20 September 2026

Our traditional “Long O” in memory of John Bennison, to be held on the Long Mynd.

The Long Mynd is an area of open moorland with valleys running East and steeper sides to the West.  Exposed open moorland, rising to 516m at Pole Bank.

Run-ability is generally good with an extensive path network and rides. The vegetation is a mixture of grass, heather, bracken and gorse. All steep slopes have scattered crags.

Venue: Assembly and parking is on the roadside on top of the Long Mynd near the Gliding Station.

Travel: By road, from the traffic lights on the A49 head west along Sandford Avenue, and then straight on at crossroads and up Burway Road. Continue ahead up onto the Mynd. Take left fork at junction, continue along single track road past Pole Cottage and park by the road near the entrance to the Gliding station.

Public transport include Transport for Wales rail services to/from Shrewsbury and the north and Hereford and Ludlow and the south.

Please indicate on the entry form if you intend to arrive by public transport or would be able to offer someone a lift from Church Stretton station.

Maps: 1:15000 by Pete Jones with more recent updates by Tim Kieniewicz.  5m contours.

The vegetation on the Mynd is constantly in flux; it is not possible to map it all, especially the bracken cuts, which the NT make throughout the summer months.

Terrain:  Exposed open moorland, rising to 516m. Run-ability is generally good with an extensive path network and rides. The vegetation is a mixture of grass, heather, bracken and gorse. All steep slopes have scattered crags and some scree. Both bracken, heather and gorse reduce run-ability. Human activity makes some paths less obvious and recent bracken cutting makes the terrain faster than shown, or it might not. The ponds on the map may have run dry. (many have currently in July).  Please avoid any wet marsh areas; the courses have been planned to avoid these.
