Wrekin Rankings, no. 2: West Midlands Championships

A series of articles about scoring competitions the club and our members are part of.

 2. West Midlands Championships

The West Midlands Champs is a competition for individuals that  happens once a year, usually at a West Midlands League Regional event in late November.

For full rules see (WM Championships Rules – West Midlands Orienteering Association (wmoa.org.uk)

The 2022 race was held at Sutton Park on November 13th. Wrekin usually manage to take a few of the titles and 2022 was no exception. Congratulations to all our Champions. We have five West Midlands Champions in our club as shown in the table below; we also had three runners-up and three third places.

Our W50 duo of Sarah Bayliss and Di Jacks were first and second, as were Grace and Harriet Allinson on W14. Grace and Harriet had moved up an age class to W14 and repeated their W12 result from last year.

Although they are both very young Annie Lewis was first on W10 and her younger brother Edward did very well to finish third on M10.

Kristof Nowicki winning M40 was an excellent result; he was the overall winner on Brown course, beating all the M21 and M35 competitors. Mike Callow won M80, while Lawrie Jones and Jane Howsam finished third on M65 and W70 respectively. Defending champion Tom Lewis took second place in M35 this year. All good performances with well-deserved results.

For the rest of us there is always next year, when we will all be older, hopefully wiser, and possibly in an older age group.
