Wrekin Rankings, no. 3: CompassSport Trophy

A series of articles about scoring competitions the club and our members are part of.

 2. CompassSport Trophy

The CompassSport competition is the orienteering equivalent of the FA Cup, a nationally organised knock-out competition open to all O-clubs in the country.

The knockout round is held in spring, at a race fairly close to home. Successful clubs can then compete in the Final which is held in autumn.

The Finals can be held anywhere in the country, so clubs may have to travel a long way to compete. In 2022 the finals, near Stirling in Scotland, were just too far for a Wrekin team to get to (although we did qualify!). However the 2023 final will be in the Forest of Dean in November so it is very accessible and it is definitely worth trying to get there.

There are two competitions held within the same event: the CompassSport Cup for large clubs and CompassSport Trophy for small ones. Wrekin counts as a small club. Club members score points based on their race position across a range of age classes, so it is best to have as many people as possible competing.

In 2023 the first knockout round for Wrekin is being held at Park Hall near Stoke on Trent on March 12th. We will be competing against COBOC and Walton Chasers so if we can muster a good turnout we will have a reasonable chance of success.

At some point in January or February we will have to enter our club team, so please put March 12th in your race diary now and then watch out for an email asking if you can compete.
