Wrekin Rankings, no. 1: West Midlands League

A series of articles about scoring competitions the club and our members are part of.

 1. West Midlands League

The West Midlands League (WML) is an inter-club and individual competition which uses the results of regional (level C) events put on by clubs in the West Midlands Orienteering Association during a year.

Each Orienteering age group has a designated colour-coded course to run. The fastest person scores a maximum of 100 points and everyone else scores fewer points based on how much longer they took. There is an option of running a shorter course with a lower points score and you can run longer courses and compete against younger or older people. The individual league uses competitors’ best scores from (half plus one) of the events. At the end of the year 15 best eligible individuals count for the overall club score. For a set of rules see the WMOA website (WM League Rules – West Midlands Orienteering Association (wmoa.org.uk))

Over the last ten years WREKIN has had a number of individual winners but has not won the WML. However, we have come second more times than any other club. It would be great to break our non-winning run in 2023 and it could happen if we can get good numbers to as many events as possible.

In 2022 WREKIN finished in fourth place out of six, closely behind second and third places. We had enough (15) people who scored points which is the key to any success but we need a fuller representation from the whole club  to improve on our result. Check out the upcoming fixture list and circle those WML league events in your diary.
